Beautiful Button Jewelry - The Book

If you've been following this blog, you already know that Susan Davis of Grandmother's Buttons loves buttons.  Truly loves buttons.  Considers them a treasure, and rightfully so.  Buttons created her jewelry business (see post at http://bit.ly/en4MeM).  Buttons are life's unrecognized works of art - historic, reflective of society's trends, almost always beautiful, and useful.  And they're not just for fastening.

In Beautiful Button Jewelry, Susan graciously opens her jewelry box and shows readers how to use vintage buttons to create fabulous pieces of jewelry.  If you have a box of your own grandmother's buttons in a drawer, this is a book with more than 25 do-it-yourself projects resulting in gorgeous earrings, necklaces, brooches, watches and bracelets all made with buttons dating back to the Victorian era through the 1950s.

The book's jewelry projects have clear, easy instructions and incorporate all kinds of antique and vintage buttons, from jet glass and mother-of-pearl, to porcelain, china and modern glass buttons. Even if you have no plans to create your own button jewelry, you will enjoy this book for its beautiful photographs, which were taken at Catalpa Plantation, and its in-depth information on antique buttons. You also get a chapter on the history of buttons (see post at http://bit.ly/gLuBHo).

Since Susan's not much for tooting her own horn, we decided to borrow a review from Amazon:

Review by S.L. Smith:  "Let me start by saying I paid FULL PRICE for this book, that is how much I was enchanted by it. I simply had to have it and have it now, and I am still quite happy that I did so. Does anyone ever pay full price anymore??

You should know that the writer has an associated web site that features terrific buttons and findings, but this book is not a hard sell for that business.

If you collect vintage sewing items you will love just looking at this book. I collect old buttons, and I am pleased at how the book is arranged. Each chapter (after the introduction and "Getting Started") is divided by button type: Victorian Metal, Jet Glass, MOP (mother of pearl), Porcelain & China, Modern Glass, and Bakelite & Celluloid. Some readers might find this strange, but as I mentioned, if you are a collector of vintage items, this is a very sensible approach. And a visual feast, even if you don't make any of the items!!

I don't think you will be disappointed especially if you are a vintage buttons/findings collector. And if you're not before buy this book, you sure will be afterwards!! This is a beautiful and inspiring addition to any crafter's book shelf."

At Grandmother's Buttons, we're proud of this beautiful book.  It makes the creation of jewelry with you own treasured buttons completely accessible.  Order your copy today from the Grandmother's Buttons website at http://bit.ly/gNJaIz--you can even ask Susan to autograph it for you.  We'd love to see what you choose to create, so please send pictures and we'll post them here or on Facebook!
